Raising our Ebenezer

“Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer, saying, “Thus far the Lord has helped us.” – 1 Sam. 7:12

I had no idea how scary this part of the adoption journey is.  We have a picture of our daughter, details of her life and personality.  Since knowing who she is, we talk about her all the time.  We dream of what life will be like with her home.

And yet, in the back of our minds, is the nagging question, “What if this doesn’t work out?  What if our referral matching us with {this} precious girl, whom we love so much already, is taken away from us?”  It is a gripping fear, one that we daily take to our Father in heaven and beg for His grace to overwhelm us until we’re no longer afraid.

The truth is, there are a number of points we must go through between now and bringing our daughter home where acceptance must be granted to us in order to continue pursuing her to be our daughter.  At every turn, there are different people who will give an official approval, and our journey of making {her} our daughter will continue.  At every turn, there is a possibility that approval might not be given.  (We’re told that the chances of this happening are very slim, but that has not stopped us from being afraid!)

How timely it was, then, when my husband leaned over to me the other day and whispered, “We will raise our ebenezer, my love.  We will raise our ebenezer high and say, ‘Thus far the Lord has helped us.’  Lord-willing, He will bring her home.” Yes, He has done the work up to this point, and He will finish it!

How timely it was, as well, when I listened to a sermon yesterday that gave an explanation as to why God told the Israelites to bring out their trumpets instead of their swords when they marched around Jericho to defeat it.  He did it to show His glory, to prove that HE alone is the God who does great things!  All praise belongs to Him!  Our adoption journey confirms it – the LORD does great things for His glory.

And how timely it was when my friend at work listened to my fear, and said, “Oh that’s tough.  It’s having to hold your daughter with open hands up to God and saying, ‘Lord, she’s yours.”  Open hands, trusting heart.  She is in the Lord’s hands.

So, today?

Today, we are raising our ebenezer.  We are lifting it up to our great Father and King and proclaiming, “He has done the work up to this point, and He will finish it to prove that He is the God who can do anything!”  And we are lifting {her}, our greatly treasured daughter, up to her loving Creator and declaring, “Father, she is in Your hands.  Our hope is in You.”

He will bring our daughter home.

Will you join us in prayer?  Pray for our girl, that God will watch over her while she is living apart from us.  Pray that He will bring her home to us.  Pray that His will would be accomplished for our family, to the glory of His marvelous name.
